Dr Colin Philip Shirley, Consultant Clinical Neurophysiologist

Dr Colin Philip Shirley is a consultant clinical neurophysiologist at University Hospital, Birmingham. Dr Shirley has written and contributed to a range of publications and presentations. He currently provides clinical leadership for a diagnostic video telemetry programme and is working with colleagues to develop new processes for clinical report dissemination and new referral systems. Dr Shirley has been producing medico-legal neurophysiology reports since 2010.

Dr Shirley undertakes:

  • nerve conduction studies*
  • electromyography for the purposes of a medico-legal assessment where indicated by referring clinicians *
  • assessment of nerve and plexus injury following trauma, including blast injury and gunshot wounds
  • assessment of nerve and plexus injury following trauma, including blast injury and gunshot wounds
  • assessments where the surgical repair of nerve injury is contemplated.

* The purpose of the above is to provide objective assessment of nerve injury and to aid in defining the presence and extent of peripheral nerve, plexus or nerve root injuries and where necessary and possible, to indicate the degree of or potential for nerve recovery.
